Despite the fact that we weren’t drinking on this episode, that’s all we talked about. Learn with Bobby Roberts about the hot new tequila, SPARKLE DONKEY. Also, we discuss rum, shitty beer that tastes great, Yellow Tail wine, and some nightmare called “buckfast”.
After slogging through a terrible opening from some guy you don’t care about our guest BEST NEW TALENT Kory Bing is gonna learn you some shit about the world of online fandom. She stuns us with Team Fortress insights! The Furry fandom! RPS fanfiction! VOCABULARY.
Please enjoy this belated show recorded at this years Stumptown Comics Fest. It was one tired hungover blur but I do remember that Ben Coleman was sitting in a throne. Have a listen as I scream at various people to come over and talk to us and berate the live audience we had who at that point I thought were mere phantoms.
Now for your viewing pleasure and his just regular pleasure, Coleman in a throne:
It’s pretty much what you would expect from a show where cartoonist Lucy Bellwood guests. Y’all gonna learn some shit about boats and what it’s like to be on a boat wearing canvas pants and what it’s like to draw comics about being on a boat in canvas pants. She also tells us about the worst punishment you can suffer at sea. (hint: It’s not the plank.)
Bonus content: We regale being drunk at a Zupans, we talk a bunch of shit about our beloved PDXYAR, we discuss the homoeroticisim of Master and Commander, Bobby tells you were air quotes originated, and Ben talks about the opera and more fucking birds. Speaking of birds, you can find a photo of the famed “potoo” on our Twitter feed.

The whole thing kicks off with a discussion of the upcoming Ender’s Game movie and the disconnect between a book about empathy and Orson Scott Card’s repugnant views on homosexuality. Plus, Terry fills us in on how your ticket money will wind up in a mormon tithe. Bonus: we tell you how to read books!
Where’s the line drawn for you between liking someone’s work but not the person themselves? How shitty can a creator be before you shut them out completely?

This week we made Bobby Roberts, the maestro of podcasting, (and co-host of Welcome to That Whole Thing) turn his mic on and let his wisdom flow out. With remarkable aplomb he turns us from the path of tangents and thwarts our awkward breaks in conversation.
A discussion on Game of Thrones turns into why I obsessivley need to search out the worst facets of humanity which turns into Jesse explaining why he began eating nuts to better himself as a person WHICH THEN TURNS INTO a short education on pecans. The Air Wolf! Perry Bible Fellowship! Conversation island!
After that dumbassery we take a walk down memory lane and recall how we drunkenly stumbled in to our terrible friendships with each other and the fine balance between humility and hubris.
You may wonder what the process is for making the quality show you enjoy weekly. Take a peek behind the curtain won’t you?
I will not lie to you. I am fairly drunk and a little emotional so you are going to get this post.
Tonight I won the Stumptown Comic Arts award for best writing for The Legend of Bold Riley. I got to accept an award for something I’ve dumped all of my time into for the better part of a decade in front of my loved ones and some of my most treasured peers tonight. There was a couple minutes between my fevered emotion tears to thank some people but there were not enough minutes to say out loud how many there are. Let me do that now.
My parents Gwen and Chris Weathington, endlessly emotionally and finacially supportive of me.
The artists of Bold Riley 1, who worked so fucking hard on this book, Vanessa Gillings, Jason Thompson, Konstantin Pogorelov, Kelly McClellan. You are the best of the best and working with you was a dream.
Zan Christiansen my publisher at Northwest Press.
My old crew, Couscous Collective, Liz Conley, Sheanon Garrity, Andrew Farago, Pancha Diaz, Chloe Dalquist. These guys were with me from the start of Bold Riley and were endlessly helpful.
And now my new Portland family, David Gerber my handsome boyfriend, Jonah Rose, Mikey Nielson, Bobby Roberts, Erika Moen, Ben Coleman, Allen Bethel, Michael Ring, Kielen King, EVERYONE at Periscope Studios, Liz Allie, Jesse David Morgan…Jesus, I know I’m going to miss someone and feel awful later.
Comics are all I wanted to do with my life and I may be over reacting to this and I could go on about how hard I worked or that I’m hot shit, but here is the thing…
Without you- I’m nothing.
Thank you for reading.
Jeff Parker is with us in the studio this week to talk about the new Batman 66 and to listen to us bitch about the new movie Oblivion. It goes without saying that we SPOIL THE SHIT out of that film, so heads up nerds.
I was suprised by my esteemed coleagues at the studio today by our theme of automobile woes, although considering Jesses current ordeal with his honda I shouldn’t have been. Cartoonist Matt Grigsby was with us to take a hard left turn into tales of Orca horror then we swerve back into the oncoming lane of car anecdotes with tales of my badass mom making the mistake of lending me her mustang and Ben’s PT Cruiser incident.
