Prompted by a facebook response to Anita Sarkeesians first Feminist Frequency video we delve into the meaty bosom of the topic of women in media. Along with the saucy Rachel Edidin (who probably has more opinions than a lady should) we hash out our qualms, qualifiers and another relevant word that starts with Q on feminism as it relates to the world of pop culture.

It’s unfortunate that people were kind of stepping over each other to get a word in, but I think that always happens with important topics like the ones brought up in the show.
My only “problem” with Anita’s first video was that it was more of a history lesson of the trope’s inception and proliferation in video game culture. But of course, her next video will cover modern examples and twists/flips on the trope, so I readily wait to see what she has to show there.
Anyway, great show! I always love it when the show gets academic.
Also, to a point Rachel made about Anita speaking to developer’s and those in positions of power responding to Anita’s criticism, I just discovered this picture, suggesting that such a thing is exactly what’s happening: http://i47.tinypic.com/zx1jep.jpg
(This is for the game BioShock: Infinite, since the picture itself doesn’t make that clear)
I still don’t have the firmest grasp on when cleavage is an expression of sexual autonomy, and when it’s exploitation, but for better or for worse, it seems that at least this developer is receptive to criticism.
I liked how Leia tore into Jesse then seamlessly said welcome to a happy go lucky podcast. Very cheery. She seemed to be in a bad mood this episode. Maybe it was because of the subject matter. Heavy stuff.
BTW, rape is NEVER funny.
